Mountain Heart Ministries exists to help meet practical needs in mountain communities, beginning with seniors and other vulnerable adults in Eastern Kentucky.

We believe the best way to help is not always to create another program. Often, strong local organizations are already doing the work—they simply don’t have enough resources to meet the need.

Whenever possible, Mountain Heart Ministries works alongside existing community programs, churches, senior services, and trusted local partners to help fill those gaps.

Our current work is focused in three areas.

SENIORS & DISABLED

Many seniors and disabled adults live on limited incomes and face challenges that are easy to overlook—especially those who are homebound or living alone.

Mountain Heart Ministries helps provide practical everyday necessities that can make life safer, more comfortable, and more dignified.

Assistance may include:

• Personal hygiene supplies
• Incontinence products
• Household necessities
• Easy-to-use food and pantry items
• Seasonal needs such as warm hats, gloves, and socks
• Connections to other available community resources

CARING FOR OUR HARLAN CO SENIORS

Our first major initiative is in Harlan County, Kentucky, where we are working to help homebound seniors affected by reductions in available food-service funding.

Rather than building a separate meal-delivery system, Mountain Heart Ministries is working with the people and programs already serving local seniors.

Our goal is simple: help them reach more people and fill needs their existing funding cannot cover.

FOOD ASSISTANCE

Food insecurity can be especially difficult for seniors, disabled adults, and people who cannot easily travel to a grocery store or food pantry.

Mountain Heart Ministries helps provide food and supplemental groceries where needs have been identified.

Depending upon available resources, assistance may include:

• Support for existing senior meal programs
• Supplemental groceries and shelf-stable foods
• Emergency food assistance
• Coordination with local food banks and community organizations
• Help filling shortages when existing programs experience funding or supply gaps

Our priority is to strengthen resources that already exist rather than duplicate them.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

Sometimes a relatively small emergency can become a serious crisis for someone living on a limited income.

As funding permits, Mountain Heart Ministries may provide limited short-term assistance with urgent basic needs, including utilities and other necessities.

Requests are considered individually according to the circumstances, available resources, and the assistance already available within the community.

Because our resources are limited, we cannot guarantee assistance with every request.

WORKING WITH OUR COMMUNITIES

Mountain Heart Ministries believes local people usually understand local needs best.

That’s why we seek relationships with senior centers, food programs, churches, community organizations, businesses, and individuals who are already serving their communities.

When an effective system is already in place, we don’t want to replace it—we want to help strengthen it.

This approach allows donor dollars to go farther while helping established local organizations reach people who might otherwise fall through the cracks.

Mountain Heart Ministries is a Christian ministry, and faith is at the heart of why we serve.

We are glad to pray with and encourage those who request it. However, assistance is provided according to need, without regard to religious affiliation or participation.
